32 - English for Beginners. Lesson 32
Discussion -
Who did it?
Who stole the tarts? -
How did the trial end? -
Was the Knave acquitted? -
Was he found guilty? -
Was he executed? -
Is the judge severe? Is he fair? Is he impartial? The King seems to be a lenient judge.

The Trial of the Century
Part III
| King: | Jury, consider your verdict! |
| Herald: | Not yet, not yet. Your majesty must listen to the next witness. |
| King: | Well, if I must, I must. Call the next witness! |
| Herald: | Alice! |
| Alice: | Here! |
| King: | What do you know about this business? |
| Alice: | Nothing. |
| King: | Nothing at all? |
| Alice: | Nothing at all. |
| King: | That is very important. Jury, write it down! |
| Herald: | Unimportant, your majesty. Your majesty means unimportant... |
| King: | Unimportant, of course. Jury, give your verdict! |
| Herald: | Not yet, your majesty. This paper has just been found. |
| Queen: | What is in it? |
| Herald: | I have not opened it yet. But it seems to me that it is a letter... |
| King: | What letter? |
| Herald: | A letter written by the prisoner to... someone. |
Notes -
They have found this paper Вторая фраза - в простом настоящем времени, в страдательном залоге: The paper is found (Документ найден). This paper has been found
The Trial of the Century
Part IV
| King: | Who is the letter directed to? |
| Herald: | It is not directed at all. There is nothing written on the outside... |
| Queen: | Then what is inside? |
| Herald: | Let me see... It is not a letter after all. It is a set of verses. |
| King: | Are they in the Knave's handwriting? |
| Herald: | No, they are not. |
| King: | He has imitated someone's handwriting! |
| Knave: | Your majesty, I did not write it. And they cannot prove that I did. |
| King: | Why? |
| Knave: | There is no name at the end of it. |
| King: | You did not sign it! The worse for you. You have meant some mischief. An honest man should sign his letters. |
| Queen: | That proves his guilt. |
| King: | Let the jury give their... |
| Queen: | No, no, sentence first - verdict after! |
| Alice: | Nonsense! The verdict comes first. |
| Queen: | Hold your tongue! |
| Alice: | I will not! |
| Queen: | Cut off her head! |
Words - Слова
direct [di'rekt] - направлять, адресовать; outside ['aut'said] - снаружи; inside [in'said] - внутри; set [set] - набор, подборка; verse [vǝ:s] - стихотворение; handwriting ['hændraitiŋ] - почерк; imitate ['imiteit] - подделывать; prove [pru:v] - доказывать; sign [sain] - подписывать; mischief['misʧif] - вред, зло; honest ['onist] - честный; guilt [gilt] - вина; tongue [tʌŋ] - язык.
Discussion -
Conversation -
Put Everything in Its Place
| Tim: | Have you seen my new cassette, Mum? |
| Mum: | Which cassette? You have tens of them. |
| Tim: | The cassette I bought two days ago. |
| Mum: | Have you looked everywhere? |
| Tim: | Yes, I have! |
| Mum: | It must be on the shelf where you keep all your cassettes... |
| Tim: | I looked. It isn't there! |
| Mum: | Now, look among these things... You must tidy up your room. |
| Tim: | I tidied it up just a couple of days ago. |
| Mum: | It was a couple of months ago! |
| Tim: | You have moved it somewhere. |
| Mum: | I have not touched anything in your room. |
| Tim: | Then, where can it be? |
| Mum: | I think you have given it to one of your friends. |
| Tim: | I have not. I listened to it a few days ago... |
| Mum: | Remember, you went to that school party the day before yesterday. |
| Tim: | Yes. And what? |
| Mum: | I think you took it and left it there. |
| Tim: | No, I brought it back... Oh, here it is! |
| Mum: | Where did you find it? Where was it? |
| Tim: | It was in the player. I forgot to take it out. |
| Mum: | Now hurry up not to be late for school. |
| Tim: | That's all right. |
| Mum: | You have not had your breakfast yet. |
| Tim: | Never mind. I can do without it. |
Words - Слова
shelf [ʃelf] - полка; among [ǝ'mʌŋ] - между, среди; tidy up ['taidi'ʌp] - прибирать(ся); move[mu:v] - здесь перекладывать; touch [tʌʧ] - трогать, дотрагиваться; take out ['teik'aut] - вынимать; without [wið'aut] - без.
Notes -
It must be somewhere. -
Не cannot find it anywhere.
Have you seen it anywhere? -
Look elsewhere. -
Question -
